During the reign of Emperor Cheng, two men of Chang’an, Shi Liang and Liu Yin, lived together. A humanlike figure appeared in their room; when they struck it, it turned into a dog and ran out. After it had gone, several figures clad in armor and carrying bows and crossbows came to Liang’s house. Liang and his companions fought them, killing some and wounding others. All proved to be dogs. These occurrences continued from the second month until the sixth, when they finally ceased. According to the “Great Plan,” these were all calamities involving dogs, brought on by the failure to heed admonition.
