Once the rooster said to his little hens, “Come quickly, up into the parlor! Let’s peck up the crumbs on the table: our mistress has gone out to pay calls.” But the little hens said, “No, no, we’re not coming! You know she’ll scold us if we do!” Then the rooster said, “She won’t know a thing about it. Come along! She never gives us anything good anyway!” Again the little hens said, “No, no, that’s that, and there’s an end to it—we’re not going up!” But the rooster would give them no peace until at last they went and busily pecked up the crumbs on the table as fast as they could. Just then the mistress came in, quickly seized a stick, drove them away, and gave them a thorough scolding. And when they were down in front of the house, the little hens said to the rooster, “Cluck, cluck, cluck, cluck, cluck, cluck, cluck—we told you so!” But the rooster laughed and merely said, “Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha—I knew it all along!” Then off they went.

Der Gockel hat einmal zu seinen Hühnerchen gesagt: "Kommt schnell in die Stube herauf! Wir wollen Brosamen zusammenpicken auf dem Tisch: unsere Frau ist ausgegangen, Visiten machen." Da sagten die Hühnerchen: "Nein, nein, wir kommen nicht! Weißt du, die Frau zankt sonst mit uns!" Da sagt der Hahn: "Sie weiß ja nichts davon, kommt nur: Sie gibt uns ja doch nie was Gutes!" Da sagten die Hühnerchen wieder: "Nein, nein, es ist aus und vorbei, wir gehen nicht hinauf!" Aber der Gockel hat ihnen keine Ruhe gelassen, bis sie endlich gegangen sind und auf den Tisch zusammengelesen haben in aller Strenge und Eile. Da kommt gerade die Frau dazu und nimmt geschwind einen Stecken, jagt sie weg und geht tüchtig mit ihnen ins Gericht. Und wie sie da vorm Haus unten sind, so sagen die Hühnerchen zum Gockel: "Ga, ga, ga, ga, ga, ga, ga - wir haben's doch gesagt!" Da hat der Gockel gelacht und nur gesagt: "Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha - hab ich's doch gewußt!" Do händ se chönne goh.
