During Jia Chong’s campaign against Wu, he once encamped at Xiangcheng. Suddenly, no one in the army could find him. Zhou Qin, a commander serving under him, was taking a midday nap when he dreamed of more than a hundred men taking Chong into custody and leading him down a narrow path. Qin awoke with a start. Hearing that Chong was missing, he went out to search for him. Suddenly he saw the very path from his dream and followed it. Sure enough, he found Chong approaching a grand residence, surrounded by a splendid array of guards and attendants. The lord of the residence sat facing south. His voice and expression were stern as he addressed Chong: “Those who will bring disorder upon my house are surely you and Xun Xu. You have already led my son astray, and now you are corrupting my grandson. I once had Ren Kai seek your dismissal, yet you would not leave; I had Yu Chun revile you, yet you would not mend your ways. Now, when the rebels of Wu are about to be subdued, you propose to submit a memorial calling for Zhang Hua’s execution. Such is your benighted folly in all things. Unless you repent and take heed, you may be put to death at any moment.” Chong knocked his forehead against the ground until it bled. The lord continued: “That you have lived so long and attained such rank and honors is due only to the merit of your father, the Minister of the Guards. In the end, I shall have your heir die beneath a bell rack, your elder daughter perish from wine laced with gold, and your younger daughter meet her doom beneath dry wood. Xun Xu, too, deserves the same. His forebears accumulated somewhat greater virtue, so his punishment will follow yours. After a few generations, his line of succession will likewise fail.” With that, he ordered Chong to leave. Suddenly Chong found himself back in camp, his face haggard and his mind bewildered. Only after several days did he recover. Later, Jia Mi died beneath a bell; Empress Jia died after drinking wine laced with gold; and Jia Wu died under interrogation, beaten with a heavy staff. Everything came to pass as foretold.
