Yu Liang, courtesy name Wenkang, was a native of Yanling. While commanding the forces in Jingzhou, he went to the privy and suddenly saw a creature there resembling a fangxiang exorcist. Its eyes were entirely red, and its body shone with light as it slowly emerged from the earth. Baring his arm, he struck it with his fist. A sound rang out at the blow, and the creature shrank back into the ground. After this, he took to his bed with illness. The diviner Dai Yang said, “During Su Jun’s rebellion, you prayed for blessings at the White Stone Shrine and promised an ox in thanksgiving. You have never fulfilled that vow. This spirit has therefore come to punish you, and there is no saving you.” The following year, Liang indeed died.
