A lion fell in love with a farmer’s daughter and asked for her hand in marriage. The farmer could not bear to give his daughter to a wild beast, yet was too frightened to refuse, so he devised a plan. As the lion kept pressing him, he said that he approved of him as a husband for his daughter, but could not give her to him unless he had his teeth pulled out and his claws cut off, for the girl, he said, was afraid of them. The lion, out of love, readily submitted to both. But when he came to see the farmer, the man, no longer afraid of him, beat him with clubs and drove him away.

So those who readily trust their enemies and strip themselves of their own advantages become easy prey to those who once feared them.
