I have heard that Abu al-Aswad bought a cross-eyed slave girl of mixed parentage and was much taken with her. His family disparaged her to him, but he marveled at them, turned his palms upward, and recited these two verses: “They find fault with her before me, yet she has no fault, save that her eyes have certain distinctions. And if there is a flaw in her eyes, still her waist is slender beneath her wraps.”
