It is told that one night the Commander of the Faithful, Harun al-Rashid, lay between two slave girls, one from Medina and the other from Kufa. The Kufan girl was massaging his hands, while the Medinan girl massaged his feet and began to stir his merchandise to life. The Kufan said to her, “I see you have taken all the capital for yourself, leaving us nothing. Give me my share.” The Medinan replied, “Malik related to me, on the authority of Hisham ibn Urwa, who related from his father, that the Prophet, God bless him and grant him peace, said: ‘Whoever brings dead land to life, it belongs to him and his descendants.’” The Kufan caught her off guard, pushed her aside, and seized it in both hands, saying, “Al-A‘mash related to us, on the authority of Khaythama, who related from Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud, that the Prophet, God bless him and grant him peace, said: ‘The game belongs to whoever catches it, not whoever flushes it out.’”
It is also told that Harun al-Rashid lay down with three slave girls: a Meccan, a Medinan, and an Iraqi. The Medinan reached for his member and stroked it until it stood erect, whereupon the Meccan sprang forward and drew it toward herself. The Medinan said to her, “What is this trespass? Malik related to me, on the authority of al-Zuhri, who related from Abdullah ibn Salim, who related from Sa‘id ibn Zayd, that the Messenger of God, God bless him and grant him peace, said: ‘Whoever brings dead land to life, it is his.’” The Meccan replied, “Sufyan related to us, on the authority of Abu al-Zinad, who related from al-A‘raj, who related from Abu Hurayra, that the Messenger of God, God bless him and grant him peace, said: ‘The game belongs to whoever catches it, not whoever flushes it out.’” Then the Iraqi pushed them both away from him and said, “This is mine until you two settle your dispute.”
