It has also reached me, O King, concerning the wiles of men, that two pigeons, a male and a female, gathered wheat and barley in their nest during the winter. When summer came, the grain shrivelled and dwindled, and the male said to the female, “You have eaten that grain.” She kept saying, “No, by God, I have eaten none of it.” But he would not believe her, and beat her with his wings and pecked her with his beak until he killed her. When the cold weather returned, the grain swelled to its former size, and the male knew that he had killed his mate unjustly and cruelly. He repented when repentance could no longer avail him, and lay down beside her, mourning her and weeping in sorrow. He would neither eat nor drink, and grew weak, and continued to waste away until he died.
