A king had three sons, all equally dear to him, and he did not know which one to appoint king after his death. When the time came for him to die, he called them to his bedside and said, 'Dear children, I have been thinking something over, and now I shall tell you: whichever of you is the laziest shall be king after me.' Then the eldest said, 'Father, the kingdom belongs to me, for I am so lazy that when I lie down to sleep and a drop of water falls into my eyes, I cannot be bothered to close them so that I may fall asleep.' The second said, 'Father, the kingdom belongs to me, for I am so lazy that when I sit by the fire to warm myself, I would sooner let my heels burn than draw back my legs.' The third said, 'Father, the kingdom is mine, for I am so lazy that if I were to be hanged, with the rope already round my neck, and someone put a sharp knife into my hand so that I could cut the rope, I would sooner let myself be hanged than raise my hand to it.' When the father heard this, he said, 'You have gone furthest of all, and you shall be king.'
