Zang Zhongying of You Fufeng served as an imperial censor. When his household prepared food and set out the tables, filth and dust would be thrown onto them. Just as a meal was nearly cooked, the pot would vanish without a trace. Weapons and crossbows moved of their own accord. Fires broke out inside chests and wicker trunks, burning all the clothing within, yet leaving the containers themselves intact. One morning, all the women and maidservants found their mirrors missing. Several days later, the mirrors were flung from beneath the hall into the courtyard, and a voice said, “Here are your mirrors back.” His granddaughter, three or four years old, disappeared, and no one could find her despite searching. Two or three days later, she was heard crying beneath the filth in the privy. Such incidents happened time and again. Xu Jishan of Runan, who had long been skilled in divination, cast the hexagrams and said, “There must be an old dark-coated dog in your household. An attendant in the inner quarters named Yixi is working with it to cause these troubles. If you truly wish to put an end to them, kill the dog and send Yixi back to his native village.” Zhongying followed his advice, and the strange happenings ceased. Later, he was transferred to serve as chief clerk to the Grand Commandant, and then promoted to Chancellor of Lu.
