Duan Yi, courtesy name Yuanzhang, was a native of Xindu in Guanghan. He studied the Book of Changes and was versed in divination by the wind. A student came to learn from him. After several years, believing he had grasped the essentials of the art, the student took his leave to return home. Duan Yi prepared an ointment for him and sealed a written message inside a tube, telling him, “If an emergency arises, open this and read it.” When the student reached Jiameng, he quarreled with an official over crossing the ferry. The official struck one of his attendants, cutting his head open. The student opened the tube and found a message that read: “When you reach Jiameng and quarrel with an official, dress the wounded man’s head with this ointment.” The student followed these instructions, and the injured man’s wound healed at once.
