Qiao Xuan, the Grand Commandant, styled Gongzu, was a native of the kingdom of Liang. Early in his career, while serving as chief clerk to the Minister over the Masses, he was sleeping by the middle gate one night toward the end of the fifth month. After midnight, he saw a patch of brilliant white on the eastern wall, as though light were streaming through an open door. He called to his attendants and questioned them, but none of them could see it. He rose and went over to feel the wall with his hand; it was just as it had always been. Yet when he returned to bed, he saw the light again, and was greatly alarmed. His friend Ying Shao happened to visit, and in the course of their conversation Qiao told him what had happened. Shao said, “There is a man from my home district named Dong Yanxing, a grandson of Xu Jishan through his daughter. In probing mysteries, uncovering hidden things, fathoming the spirits, and understanding the workings of change, even Sui Meng and Jing Fang could not surpass him. But he is narrow-minded by nature and is ashamed to be counted among diviners. Those who practice divination sometimes come to consult him as their teacher.” Wang Shumao suggested that they go and fetch him, and before long returned with him. Gongzu received Yanxing with elaborate courtesy and a lavish feast, stepping down from his mat to offer him wine. Yanxing said, “I am merely a scholar from an obscure place, with no extraordinary gifts. Such generous offerings and gracious words truly put me ill at ease. If there is anything I might be able to discern for you, I beg you to let me attempt it.” Gongzu demurred repeatedly before at last consenting. Yanxing said, “My lord, you must have witnessed something strange: a white light like the brightness of an open doorway. It will do you no harm. In the first ten days of the sixth month, when the cocks crow, you will hear mourning from the household to the south. That will be an auspicious sign. When autumn comes, you will be transferred north to a commandery whose name contains the element ‘metal.’ In time you will become a general and rise to one of the Three Excellencies.” Gongzu said, “With an omen as strange as this, I scarcely know how to save my family, much less aspire to honors I have never dreamed of. You are merely being kind to me.” Before dawn on the ninth day of the sixth month, Grand Commandant Yang Bing died suddenly. On the seventh day of the seventh month, Qiao was appointed governor of Julu; the character ju in its name has the ‘metal’ component at its side. Later he became General Who Crosses the Liao and successively held the offices of the Three Excellencies.
