Wei Shu, courtesy name Yangyuan, was a native of Fan in Rencheng. Orphaned in childhood, he once went to Yewang, where his host’s wife gave birth during the night. Soon afterward, he heard the sound of horses and carriages, and voices asking, “A boy or a girl?” “A boy,” came the reply. This was written down. “At fifteen, he will die by a blade.” Then came another question: “Who is the man sleeping here?” “His Excellency Wei Shu.” Fifteen years later, Shu visited his host again and asked what had become of the child born that night. “He was cutting mulberry branches when he was struck by an axe and died,” his host replied. Shu then knew that he was destined to become one of the Three Excellencies.
