When Jia Yi was Grand Tutor to the Prince of Changsha, on the gengzi day of the fourth month, a fu bird flew into his quarters and perched in a corner beside his seat. It stayed a long while before flying away. Jia Yi opened a book of divination and consulted it. It read: “When a wild bird enters a room, the master will soon depart.” Troubled by this omen, he composed “Rhapsody on the Fu Bird,” treating life and death as one, and misfortune and good fortune as equal, so that he might yield to fate and steady his resolve.
