They say that a farmer walking beside a river lost his axe. The river took pity on him and brought up a silver one. When the farmer said it was not his, the river brought up a golden one. He disclaimed that one too, so the river returned his own axe and gave him the others as well, in admiration of his honesty. Another farmer, hoping for the same good fortune, deliberately threw his axe into the same river. But the river did not even send back his own. The first farmer happened to come upon him and said, “A river does not always yield axes.”
