Two men were traveling together when one of them found an axe. The other, who had found nothing, urged him not to say, “I have found it,” but “We have found it.” A little later, the people who had lost the axe came upon them. As they pursued the man carrying it, he said to his companion, “We are done for!” But the other replied, “Say ‘I am done for,’ not ‘We are done for.’ After all, when you found the axe, you said ‘I have found it,’ not ‘We have found it.’” The fable shows that those who are given no share in good fortune will not prove steadfast friends in adversity.
