A hardworking widow who had servant girls used to wake them for their work while it was still dark, at the crowing of the cocks. Worn out by their constant toil, the girls decided to kill the cock that lived at the house, believing that he was the one who roused their mistress in the night. But once they had done so, they found themselves in still worse trouble. For their mistress, no longer knowing when the cocks would crow, began waking them even earlier in the night.

The fable shows that many people bring misfortune upon themselves through their own schemes.
