In the first month of the fifth year of Taikang, two dragons appeared in a well in the imperial arsenal. The arsenal was where the treasured weapons by which emperors asserted their might and maintained their rule were stored. Its buildings were deep and closely enclosed, no place for dragons to dwell. Seven years later, the princes of the imperial house began killing one another; twenty-eight years later, two men of the Hu peoples did indeed usurp the sacred authority of the throne, and both had Long, “dragon,” in their courtesy names.
