In the sixth year of the Taikang era under Emperor Wu of Jin, a two-legged tiger was captured in Nanyang. The tiger embodies the essence of yin yet dwells in yang; it is a beast of Metal. Nanyang is a name associated with Fire. The essence of Metal had entered Fire and lost its proper form—a portent of turmoil in the imperial house. In the eleventh month of the seventh year, on the bingchen day, a four-horned beast appeared in Hejian. It was as though Heaven were warning: “Horns signify weapons. Four signifies the four quarters. Armed conflict will arise in every quarter.” Later, the Prince of Hejian indeed drew together troops from all four quarters, laying the groundwork for rebellion.
