During the Wei dynasty, a hawk hatched in a swallow’s nest in Weiyang Palace; its beak and talons were both red. Later, during the Qinglong era, Emperor Ming began building the Lingxiao Pavilion. No sooner had construction begun than a magpie nested on it. The emperor asked Gaotang Long what this meant. He replied, “The Book of Odes says, ‘The magpie has a nest; the dove dwells in it.’ Now Your Majesty is building a palace, and a magpie has come to nest there. This is an omen that Your Majesty will not live to see it completed, nor dwell in it.”
