Dva krapa na strehi orožarne
During the Taikang era, two carp appeared on the roof of the imperial arsenal. The arsenal is a storehouse of weapons; fish have scales like armor and thus also belong to the category of arms. Fish embody the utmost yin, while the rooftop is a place of supreme yang. Their appearance on the roof signified the utmost yin assailing supreme yang through the calamity of armed conflict. At the beginning of Emperor Hui’s reign, the empress’s father, Yang Jun, was put to death, and arrows flew across the palace precincts. The empress was reduced to commoner status and died in confinement in a secluded palace. At the end of the Yuankang era, Empress Jia wielded absolute power and brought about the crown prince’s death through slander; soon afterward, she too was deposed and put to death. Within ten years, calamity twice befell the imperial consorts: this was the fulfillment of the omen. From then on, disaster and disorder took shape. Jing Fang’s Portents of the Changes says: “When fish leave the water and fly onto the roads, armed conflict is about to break out.”
