When Ji Huanzi was digging a well, he unearthed something resembling an earthenware jar, with a sheep inside. He sent someone to ask Confucius about it, saying, “While digging a well, I found a dog. What could it be?” Confucius replied, “From what I, Qiu, have heard, it was a sheep. I have heard that the strange creatures of wood and stone are the kui and the wangliang; those of the water are dragons and the wangxiang; and the strange creature of the earth is called the fenyang.” The Record of the Xia Cauldrons says: “The wangxiang resembles a three-year-old child, with red eyes, a black body, large ears, long arms, and red claws. If bound with ropes, it can be caught and eaten.” Master Wang said, “The essence of wood takes the form of the Youguang, and the essence of metal takes the form of the Qingming.”
