A hunter was once walking through the forest when he met a sandpiper. “Dear friend, don’t shoot my children!” said the sandpiper. “And which ones are your children?” asked the hunter.
“The prettiest children in the forest are mine,” answered the sandpiper. “Then I shall take care not to shoot them,” said the hunter. But when he returned, he was carrying a whole bunch of young sandpipers he had shot. “Oh! Oh! Why did you shoot my children after all?” cried the sandpiper. “Were these yours?” asked the hunter. “Why, I shot the ugliest ones I could find.” “Ah, yes!” replied the sandpiper. “Don’t you know that everyone thinks their own children the prettiest?”
