A gardener’s dog fell into a well. The gardener, wishing to bring him up, climbed down into the well himself. But the dog, thinking he had come to push him farther under, turned and bit him. As the gardener climbed out in pain, he said, “I have got what I deserve. Why ever did I go to such trouble to save a creature bent on its own destruction?” This fable is aimed at the unjust and ungrateful.
