A man, seeing a gardener watering his vegetables, said to him, “How is it that wild plants flourish, though no one plants or tends them, while those you cultivate so often wither?” The gardener replied, “Because wild plants are watched over by divine providence alone, while cultivated plants are tended by human hands.” The fable shows that a mother’s nurturing is naturally better than a stepmother’s care.
