In the fifth year of King Xiaowen of Qin, while he was visiting Xuyan, someone presented him with a five-legged ox. At the time, Qin was making excessive demands on the people’s labor, and all under Heaven turned against it. Jing Fang’s Commentary on the Book of Changes says: “When corvée labor is imposed and the people are robbed of the time they need to tend their fields, the portent is an ox born with five legs.”
