In the thirteenth year of King Xiang of Wei’s reign, a woman transformed into a man and fathered a child with his wife. Jing Fang’s Commentary on the Changes says: “When a woman transforms into a man, this is called the flourishing of yin: a person of lowly station will become king. When a man transforms into a woman, this is called yin overcoming yang: the calamity it portends is ruin.” Another interpretation says: “Men transforming into women signify the excessive use of castration as punishment; women transforming into men signify rule by women.”
