During the Xianning era of Emperor Wu of Jin, when Wei Shu was Minister of the Masses, two enormous snakes, each some ten zhang long, lived among the rafters above the audience hall of his official residence. They had been there for several years without anyone knowing; people merely wondered why small children, chickens, and dogs so often went missing from the compound. One night, one of the snakes came out and, passing beside a pillar, was wounded by a blade. Too badly hurt to climb back up, it was discovered. Several hundred men were mustered to attack it, and only after a prolonged struggle did they finally kill it. When they examined its lair, they found the space beneath the roof filled with bones. The official residence was then demolished and rebuilt.
