During the reign of Emperor Wu of Han, Zhang Kuan served as Inspector of Yangzhou. Two old men had been disputing a tract of mountain land and had brought their boundary quarrel before the provincial authorities, but the case had dragged on for years without a verdict. When Kuan took office, they came again. Looking closely at the two old men, Kuan saw that their forms were not human. He ordered soldiers armed with staves and halberds to bring them in, then demanded, “What manner of spirits are you?” The old men fled. Kuan shouted for them to be stopped, and they turned into two snakes.
