“What a strange thing, my friends,” said Socrates, “this seems to be that people call pleasure! How curiously it is bound up with what seems its opposite, pain: the two will not come to a person together, yet if someone pursues one and catches it, he is almost always compelled to take the other too, as though they were two creatures joined at a single head. And I think,” he said, “that if Aesop had thought of them, he would have composed a fable: a god, wishing to reconcile them in their quarrel but finding himself unable to do so, joined their heads together. That is why, whenever one comes to anyone, the other follows after.”
