A farmer’s sons were always quarreling. Though he often urged them to stop, he could not persuade them with words to change their ways, so he decided to teach them by a practical example. He told them to bring him a bundle of sticks. When they had done as he asked, he first handed them the sticks all together and told them to break them. Though they strained with all their might, they could not. Then he untied the bundle and gave them the sticks one by one. When they broke these easily, he said, “So it is with you, my sons: if you stand united, your enemies will never overcome you; but if you quarrel among yourselves, you will be easy prey.” The fable shows that unity brings strength, while discord leaves us easily defeated.

Γεωργοῦ παῖδες ἐστασίαζον· ὁ δʼ, ὡς πολλὰ παραινῶν οὐκ ἡδύνατο πεῖσαι αὐτούς λόγοις μεταβάλλεσθαι, ἔγνω δεῖν πρᾶγμα τοῦτο πρᾶξαι. Καὶ παρηῄνεσεν αὐτοῖς ῥάβδων δέσμην κομίσαι. Τῶν δὲ τὸ προσταχθὲν ποιησάντων, τὸ μὲν πρῶτον δοὺς αὐτοῖς ἀθρόας τὰς ῥάβδους ἐκέλευσε κατεάσσειν· ἐπειδὴ δὲ καὶ περιβιαζόμενοι οὐκ ἠδύναντο, ἐκ δευτέρου λύσας τὴν δέσμην ἀνὰ μίαν αὐτοῖς ῥάβδον ἐδίδου· τῶν δὲ ῥᾳδίως κατακλώντων, ἔφη· ,,ἀτὰρ οὖν καὶ ὑμεῖς, ὦ παῖδες, ἐὰν μὲν ὁμοφρονῆτε, ἀχείρωτοι τοῖς ἐχθροῖς ἔσεσθε· ἐὰν δὲ στασιάζητε, εὐάλωτοι.“
Ὁ λόγος δηλοῖ, ὅτι τοσοῦτον ἰσχυρότερόν ἐστιν ἡ ὁμόνοια, ὅσον εὐκαταγώνιστος ἡ στάσις.
