This, too, happened long ago. There was a police official named Tadaakira. When he was young, he quarreled with some young men of the capital at the foot of the bridge at Kiyomizu. Each drew his sword, and they surrounded Tadaakira, intent on killing him. Tadaakira drew his own sword and climbed toward the temple hall, but many more stood facing him at its eastern end. He fled inside, clamped the lower edge of a wooden lattice shutter beneath his arms, and leaped into the ravine before him. The wind caught the shutter, and he floated gently down to the bottom of the ravine like a bird coming to roost. From there he made his escape. The young men of the capital stood in a row, peering down into the ravine in astonishment, but there was nothing they could do, and so the matter ended—or so the tale is told.
