An old woman suffering from an eye ailment asked a physician to treat her for a fee. Before witnesses, she agreed that if he cured her eyes, she would pay him handsomely; but if she was not cured and the ailment persisted, she would pay him nothing. With this settled, each time the physician applied his treatment to her eyes, he stole a little more of her belongings. Before long he cured her and demanded the agreed fee. But when the old woman regained her sight and saw none of her belongings in her house, she refused to pay him anything. The physician kept pressing her for payment, and when she continued to put him off, he brought her before the magistrates. Standing before them, she said, “This man is telling the truth in what he says: I did promise to pay his fee if I recovered my sight, and to pay him nothing if my ailment persisted. Now he claims that I am cured, but I say that the opposite has happened to me. For when my eyes were diseased, I could see all sorts of furnishings and valuables in my house; but now, when he claims that I can see, I cannot see a single thing.”

The fable shows how wicked people, through greed, unwittingly bring about their own exposure.
