In the thirty-sixth year of Qin Shi Huang’s reign, an envoy named Zheng Rong was returning from the lands east of the passes and was about to enter Hangu Pass. Travelling west to Huayin, he saw a plain carriage drawn by white horses descending Mount Hua. Suspecting that its occupant was no mortal, he stopped by the roadside and waited. When the carriage reached him, its occupant asked Zheng Rong, “Where are you bound?” “To Xianyang,” he replied. The man in the carriage said, “I am an emissary of Mount Hua. I wish to entrust you with a letter to deliver to the Lord of Hao Pool. On your way to Xianyang, you will pass Hao Pool. There you will see a great catalpa tree and a stone with patterned markings. Take the stone and knock on the tree; someone will answer.” He then handed him the letter. Zheng Rong did as he was told and knocked on the catalpa tree with the stone. Sure enough, someone came to collect the letter. The following year, the Ancestral Dragon died.
