Earlier, in the reigns of Emperors Yuan and Cheng of Han, men of foresight had said: “When a reign of Wei bears the name ‘Harmony,’ a stone will be revealed more than three thousand li to the west, with five horses tethered to it and an inscription reading: ‘A great campaign against Cao.’” When Wei first rose, a stone was indeed revealed in Willow Valley in Zhangye. It first became visible during the Jian’an era, its figures took shape during the Huangchu era, and its markings were complete during the Taihe era. It measured seven fathoms around and rose a fathom high at the center. Against its blue-gray surface stood white markings: dragons, horses, scaled creatures, deer, phoenixes, and immortals, all brilliantly distinct. This was an omen of the successive rise of Wei and Jin. In the third year of Jin’s Taishi era, Jiao Sheng, Administrator of Zhangye, submitted a memorial: “I have compared the original drawing retained in the commandery with the markings now on the stone. The number of characters differs. I respectfully submit a detailed drawing.” Examination of its markings revealed five horse figures. On one sat a man wearing a flat-topped headcloth and holding a halberd. Another resembled a horse, but was not fully formed. Among the characters were “metal,” “center,” “Grand Marshal,” “king,” “great good fortune,” “upright,” and “the beginning of longevity.” One group, arranged in a line, read: “Metal shall claim it.”
