Empress Deng of the Han dynasty, known posthumously as Hexi, once dreamed that she climbed a ladder and reached out to touch heaven. Its surface was vast, clear, and smooth, with something like stalactites hanging from it. She tilted her head back and drank from them. When she consulted the interpreters of dreams, they told her, “Yao dreamed of climbing up to heaven; Tang dreamed of reaching heaven and licking it. These were all omens foretelling the rise of sage kings. The good fortune this portends is beyond words.”
