A weasel fell in love with a handsome young man and prayed to Aphrodite to turn her into a woman. The goddess took pity on her passion and transformed her into a beautiful maiden. When the young man saw her, he fell in love and took her home with him. As they sat in the bedchamber, Aphrodite, wishing to discover whether the weasel’s change of body had also changed her character, let a mouse loose between them. Forgetting her new circumstances, the weasel sprang from the bed and chased the mouse, eager to devour it. The goddess, angered by her behavior, changed her back into her original form.
So too, people who are thoroughly wicked by nature may change their outward form, but never their character.
