While Wang Mang was acting as regent, Zhai Yi, governor of Dong Commandery, knew that he intended to usurp the Han throne and planned to raise an army against him. Zhai Yi’s elder brother Xuan was teaching a hall full of students. Several dozen geese and wild geese were in the courtyard when a dog came in from outside and attacked them, killing them all. Alarmed, those present rushed to save the birds, only to find that every one had had its head bitten off. The dog ran out through the gate, and though they searched for it, they could not discover where it had gone. Xuan took this as a terrible omen. A few days later, Wang Mang wiped out all three branches of his family.
