A dog lay sleeping outside a farmhouse. A wolf rushed up and was about to kill him for food, but the dog begged him not to eat him just yet. “As you see,” he said, “I am thin and scrawny now. But if you wait a little, my masters are going to hold a wedding feast. Then I shall have plenty to eat and grow fatter, and I shall make you a tastier meal.” Persuaded by this, the wolf went away. A few days later he returned and found the dog asleep up on the roof. Standing below, he called to the dog to come down, reminding him of their agreement. But the dog replied, “Well, wolf, if you ever find me sleeping outside the farmhouse again, do not wait for a wedding!” The fable shows that sensible people, once they have escaped a danger, guard against it for the rest of their lives.
