There was once an unskilled physician. While he was attending a sick man, all the other doctors told the patient that his life was in no danger, though his illness would linger. This physician alone told him to put all his affairs in order. “For you will not live beyond tomorrow,” he said, and with that he left. Some time later, the sick man recovered and ventured out, pale and barely able to walk. The physician met him and said, “Greetings! How are those in the world below?” The man replied, “They are at peace, having drunk the water of forgetfulness. But just a little while ago, Death and Hades were making dreadful threats against all the doctors, because they would not let the sick die, and they were drawing up a list of them all. They were about to write down your name too, but I fell at their feet and pleaded with them, swearing that you were no true physician, and that the accusation against you was groundless.” This fable exposes and condemns doctors who are uneducated and ignorant, yet full of fine talk.
