Yuan Ke was a man of Jiyin. He was handsome, and many families in the district wished to give him a daughter in marriage, but he never married. He grew fragrant herbs of five colors for several decades and ate their seeds. One day, a divine moth of five colors alighted on the herbs. Yuan Ke gathered it up and laid it on a bed of cloth, where it brought forth silkworms. When the season came to raise them, a divine maiden arrived by night to help him tend them, feeding them, too, on the fragrant herbs. They obtained a hundred and twenty cocoons, each as large as an earthenware jar. It took six or seven days to reel all the silk from a single cocoon. When the reeling was done, the maiden and Yuan Ke departed together as immortals, and no one knew where they had gone.
