Wu Meng was a native of Puyang. He served the state of Wu as magistrate of Xi’an and subsequently made his home in Fenning. He was deeply devoted to his parents. He met Ding Yi, an adept who imparted wondrous formulas to him; later he also obtained secret methods and divine talismans, and his mastery of the Daoist arts became renowned. Once, when a great wind arose, he inscribed a talisman and cast it onto the roof. A dark crow carried it away in its beak, and the wind immediately ceased. Asked why he had done this, he replied, “There is a boat on the southern lake caught in this wind. A Daoist aboard it appealed for help.” Inquiry proved his words true. Yu Qing, the magistrate of Xi’an, had been dead for three days when Wu Meng said, “His allotted span has not yet run its course. I must appeal to Heaven.” He lay down beside the corpse, and several days later both he and the magistrate rose. Later, while returning to Yuzhang with his disciples, he came to a river whose current was so fierce that no one could cross. With the white feather fan in his hand, he traced a line across the rushing water, and a dry path appeared. They walked across at a leisurely pace; once they had passed, the waters returned. Those who witnessed it were astonished. Once, while he was serving as governor of Xunyang, a violent wind suddenly sprang up at the home of Staff Officer Zhou. Wu Meng at once inscribed a talisman and cast it onto the roof, and within moments the wind subsided.
