Yan Han, whose courtesy name was Hongdu, had a sister-in-law, the wife of his second elder brother, who had lost her sight through illness. A physician prescribed a remedy that required a python’s gallbladder, but despite every effort to find one, none could be obtained. Han spent many days in anxious lamentation. One day, as he sat alone, a boy in blue, about thirteen or fourteen years old, suddenly appeared and handed him a blue pouch. Han opened it and found a snake’s gallbladder inside. The boy lingered a moment, then went out through the door, turned into a blue bird, and flew away. With the gallbladder, the medicine was prepared, and his sister-in-law was cured at once.
