When Aesop was addressing the assembly in Samos, where a popular leader was on trial for his life, he told this story: “A fox crossing a river was swept into a ravine. Unable to climb out, she lay there suffering for a long time, with many ticks clinging to her. A hedgehog wandering by saw her, took pity on her, and asked whether he should remove the ticks. But she would not let him. When he asked why, she said, ‘Because these are already full of my blood and draw very little more. If you remove them, others will come hungry and drink up what blood I have left.’” Then Aesop said, “And so with you, men of Samos: this man will do you no further harm, for he is rich. But if you put him to death, others will come who are poor, and they will drain your public treasury by stealing from it.”
