A lion and a bear found some food in a marsh and fought over it. They battered each other so fiercely that their strength gave out, and they lay half dead. A fox passing by saw them lying there, and, noticing the food between them, snatched it up and ran off. Watching her go, but unable to rise, they said, “Wretched creatures that we are! We have been fighting for the fox’s benefit.” The fable shows that many who toil and struggle only secure a profit for others.
