While a lion lay sleeping, a mouse ran across his mouth. The lion woke with a start, caught the mouse, and was about to devour him. But the mouse begged him not to eat him, promising that, if spared, he would repay his kindness many times over. The lion laughed and let him go. Not long afterward, it happened that the lion owed his life to the mouse’s gratitude. Some hunters had caught him and tied him to a tree with a rope. Hearing his groans, the mouse came and gnawed through the rope. Once he had freed the lion, he said, “You laughed at me then, never expecting that I could repay your kindness. Now you know that even mice can show gratitude.” The fable shows that when fortunes change, even the mightiest may need the help of those weaker than themselves.
