Once upon a time there was a girl who was beautiful, but lazy and careless. When she had to spin, she was so ill-tempered that if she found even a little knot in the flax, she would tear out a whole handful and fling it on the ground beside her. Now she had a servant girl who was hardworking, and who gathered up the discarded flax, cleaned it, spun it into fine thread, and had it woven into a pretty dress for herself. A young man had courted the lazy girl, and they were soon to be married. At the wedding-eve festivities, the industrious servant danced merrily about in her beautiful dress, and the bride said, 'Oh, how that lass can skip about in the scraps I threw out!'
The bridegroom heard this and asked the bride what she meant. She told him that the girl was wearing a dress made from the flax she had thrown away. When the bridegroom heard this and saw how lazy she was, and how hardworking the poor servant girl was, he left her standing there, went over to the other girl, and chose her for his wife.
