Confucius revised the Spring and Autumn Annals and composed the Classic of Filial Piety. When both were complete, he fasted and purified himself, then bowed toward the Pole Star, reporting their completion to Heaven. A vast gloom gathered, and white mist rose, brushing the earth. A white rainbow descended from above and turned into a piece of yellow jade, three feet long, with an inscription carved upon it. Confucius knelt to receive it and read aloud: “The precious writing appears; Liu Ji shall hold it. Mao, Metal, and Knife lie north of the Chariot. His name is Grain and Child; all under Heaven shall submit.”
