Once upon a time a poor, pious peasant died and came to the gates of heaven. At the very same time, a very, very rich gentleman was there too, and he also wished to enter heaven. Then Saint Peter came with the key, opened the gates, and let the gentleman in; but he seems not to have noticed the peasant, for he shut the gates again. From outside, the peasant heard how joyfully the gentleman was welcomed into heaven, and how those within played music and sang. At last all was quiet again, and Saint Peter came, opened the gates of heaven, and let the peasant in. The peasant thought there would be music and singing for his arrival too, but all was silent. He was certainly welcomed with every kindness, and the angels came to meet him, but no one sang. So the peasant asked Saint Peter why there was no singing for him as there had been for the rich gentleman: it seemed that heaven was just as partial as the world below.
Then Saint Peter said, "Oh no, you are as dear to us as anyone else, and you may enjoy the delights of heaven just as the rich gentleman does. But you see, poor peasants like you come to heaven every day. A rich gentleman like that, though—only one comes along every hundred years or so."
