A farmer came upon some gold while digging. Every day thereafter he crowned the Earth with garlands, believing she had bestowed this blessing on him. But Fortune appeared before him and said, “My good man, why do you give the Earth credit for my gifts, which I gave you because I wished to make you rich? For if circumstances should change and this gold of yours pass into other hands, I know that you will then blame me, Fortune.” The fable shows that we should recognize our benefactor and give thanks where they are due.
